Baobab Microfinance – Ghana

.

Baobab Microfinance started its activities in 2008 in Tamale, in the Northern Region of Ghana. The MFI was created by two individuals, both originally from the North who wanted to reduce the level of poverty of their birth region.

It currently has 4 branches and provides financial services, through a group methodology, by largely targeting low income women in the informal sector. The mission of the institution is a sustainable end of poverty in Northern Ghana which they are trying to achieve through the Susu program in the form of: microcredit, training and support for microenterprises.

The MFI is currently financed by local funders but wants to start a partnership with a first international funder to have access to more favourable financial conditions.

Today, Baobab provides its services to more than 22,200 clients, of which 98% are women. It also finances, via small loans (EUR 229), about 12,184 micro-entrepreneurs, 75% of whom are coming from rural areas.
