BIMAS
BIMAS has been created after the great success of the PLAN EMBU initiative, which aimed to provide trainings and credits for small businesses. Business Initiatives and Assistance Services (BIMAS) became an independent institution in 1994.
Their mission is to provide innovative financial and non-financial services to poor and economically productive rural populations to create sustainable wealth.
Currently, the institution mainly targets rural micro-entrepreneurs (92%), of whom 67% are women. Although BIMAS operates in rural areas, agricultural credit accounts for only 3% of the portfolio and mainly concerns milk production.
Financial services are provided through 23 agencies in 17 of the 47 counties of the Kenyan territory. The number of borrowers exceeds 18,000 and the average disbursed loan is of EUR241.
